Maryland’s rate of fatal car accidents may be below the national average, but the Old Line State is no stranger to serious crashes with fatal outcomes. These devastating accidents leave victims and their families to face enormous physical, emotional, and financial loss.

Deadly car crashes are reported as occurring more often in certain traffic locations in Maryland. Recently, accident reports have made it clear that the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, or the BW Parkway 295, is one of the most dangerous roads in the state.

All types of car accidents have occurred BW Parkway 295 over the last year, including multi-vehicle accidents, and those involving pedestrians and motorcyclists. More often than not, these accidents lead to stretches of BW Parkway 295 being shut down for significant periods. Not only do these car crashes cause severe injury and damage to those involved, but they also result in hazardous conditions, major delays, and other costs for Maryland motorists.

In February 2022, a multi-vehicle crash occurred along the southbound lanes of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Prince George’s County. The following month, a motorcyclist was medevacked from the scene of a serious accident on the same roadway, after sustaining life-threatening injuries. In August, the northbound lanes of the BW Parkway near the beltway were closed for more than seven hours following a crash that left one man dead and a woman hospitalized with injuries.

September was an especially dangerous month for motorists driving along the BW Parkway: in the early hours of September 4, police responded to a car crash involving two vehicles northbound on the BW Parkway near Route 495, that left one person dead and another in the hospital with injuries.

The following week, a woman was killed in a tragic hit-and-run. The woman was driving home from work south on BW Parkway 295 when her SUV hydroplaned and hit the guard rail. After she exited her vehicle to seek assistance, the woman was struck and killed by a driver who left the scene of the accident. The next day, another motorcycle crash on the BW Parkway in Prince George’s County occurred, leaving one person injured and hospitalized.

Most recently, on October 3, the northbound lanes of the Baltimore Washington Parkway were closed after a car crash caused a vehicle to run off the road, roll over, and burst into flames. The driver of that vehicle was killed, while the driver of vehicle that caused the fatal crash fled the scene.
