Volvo Tests Bicycle Helmets with Simulated Crashes

Baltimore Car Accident Lawyers weigh in on Volvo testing bicycle helmets. Luxury vehicle automaker, Volvo, recently teamed up with Swedish helmet manufacturer POC to test bike helmets in ways that have never been done before. In news that may come as a surprise to bicyclists, apart from the recent Volvo-POC tests, today’s bicycle helmets are not tested in simulated crashes with automobiles. Standard tests simulate helmets hitting the ground at low speeds with relatively minimal impact. How helmets respond in these tests does not reflect how they will hold up in high-speed crashes between bicyclists and motor vehicles.

Volvo and POC hope to use these new tests to improve technology in a way that exceeds current safety requirements and save lives. According to the most recent data available, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 783 bicyclists were killed in car accidents in a single year. These crashes happen more often at night in urban areas. In more than one-third of fatal accidents involving motor vehicles and bicyclists, alcohol was a factor.

Protecting Cyclists

The NHTSA wants helmet-use to be the first step in every bicyclist’s ride. Volvo and POC want the helmet to be durable enough to protect the rider in a crash. At their safety research facility in Sweden, Volvo fitted dummy heads with POC helmets and launched them at the hood of a test car at various angles and speeds.

POC assessed the results and observed gaps in previous testing protocols that inevitably impacted the level of protection existing helmets provide. Both Volvo and POC stated the learnings from the research project will help POC make its helmets safer and more protective in a bicycle accident.
