Parking Lot Accidents During Holiday Shopping Season

Baltimore Accident Lawyers weigh in on parking lot accidents during the busy holiday season. Stores have been stocking their shelves with holiday decorations since before Halloween, which means the holiday shopping season frenzy is in full swing. While some prefer to do their shopping online, there are still plenty of people who are willing to brave the crowds so that they can shop in person. In addition to standing in long lines and dealing with holiday traffic, shoppers must deal with busy parking lots. With the stress that comes with holiday shopping, the number of accidents that occur in busy parking lots during the busy shopping season increases dramatically.

AAA offers the following tips on how to avoid holiday hazards in parking lots:

  • Use an alternate entrance. Most shoppers will park near the main entrance of a store or mall. This means that the parking lot in that area will be busier than the lots near the other entrances. These lots will likely be less congested and have more spots close to the store.
  • Be open to parking further away. Everyone tries to take the spot closest to the store. If you park further away, you will be more likely to find a spot. One of the downsides to parking farther away is that these spots may be narrower, so be careful when opening your door so that you do not scratch or dent the car parked next to you. Also use caution when pulling in and out of tight spots.
  • Keep headlights on at all times. Even in parking lots and garages, it is recommended that you keep your headlights on as it makes your car more visible and reduces the risk of being in an accident.
  • Avoid tight spots. Do not try to fit your truck or SUV into a spot designated for compact cars. In addition, do not park between two SUVs, minivans, or other larger vehicle as it can be more difficult to see when trying to back out of a spot.
  • Avoid backing out of a spot. If possible, try to either back into a spot, so that you can drive forward out of the spot, or pull out of your spot by driving forward through an empty spot in front of your car.
  • Watch out for children. Small children can be hard to see, and they tend to make quick unexpected movements. Pay close attention to children as you drive in and out of parking lots, especially during the holidays when parents may be distracted, talking on their cell phones, or looking for their car.
  • Keep your seatbelt buckled. Even when driving at a low speed through a parking lot, a collision can cause injuries and damage to your vehicle. Everyone, including children and backseat passengers should remain buckled up until you come to a complete stop and are ready to get out of the car.
