Baltimore Car Accident Lawyers: Car Owners Unaware of Vehicles’ CapabilitiesJanuary 9, 2017
In recent years, cars have become so technologically advanced that it often takes new car owners months to fully understand what their vehicle is capable of doing. The Power’s 2016 U.S. Tech Experience Index Study measured an owners’ overall experience with the vehicle’s technology within the first 90 days of owning the vehicle. Overall, they found that many vehicle owners have no idea what their car can do.
The study reviewed the following lack of knowledge with regard to the vehicle’s technology:
- Collision protection
- Comfort and convenience
- Driving assistance
- Entertainment and connectivity
Are Buyers Paying a Premium for Unused Technology?
Added technology in new cars is going to drive the prices of up. However, if people do not know the technology is there, or have no idea how to use it, they do not benefit from the advantages that the technology offers. In addition, if a safety feature, like a voice recognition system, fails to accurately translate a driver’s request because of outside noise like wind or loud trucks, it may fail to protect the driver from a potential car accident.
Researchers also found that over 40 percent of owners stopped using the car’s technology. Moreover, more than 50 percent of that group stopped within the first month. According to an executive director at JD Power, the car dealer has a lot of influence over whether or not owners will use the technology. When the dealer explains the features that come with the car, including how to operate the technologies, customers tend to be more satisfied compared to those who learn from someone else or on their own.
Considering the connection between user satisfaction and technology, vehicle manufacturers may need to determine a way to make the technologies more user-friendly. If the technology is well integrated, user-friendly, and thoroughly explained by the car dealer, it is more likely that the owner will have a safer driving experience.
