Baltimore Personal Injury Lawyers: Make Safety a Priority This Memorial Day Weekend

Summer is right around the corner and the upcoming Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the season. The three-day weekend is typically filled with family activities, parties with friends and, for some, traffic-filled drives to the beach. Many of these plans also involve alcohol, which can have devastating consequences if an impaired driver gets behind the wheel. With more drivers on the road, some of whom may be under the influence of alcohol, the risk of being involved in a car accident increases significantly. If you keep some simple safety tips in mind, you can avoid injuries, and keep yourself and your family safe.

According to the National Safety Council, there has been an 11.5% average increase in fatal traffic accidents during the Memorial Day weekend over the past six years, compared to regular summer weekends. The NSC predicts that there could be over 400 car accident fatalities and another 43,500 injuries that require medical attention. In 2010, of the 397 deaths over Memorial Day weekend, 40% were alcohol-related.

The following safety tips should be kept in mind any time you get behind the wheel, but particularly during this busy Memorial Day weekend:

  • Do not use your cell phone to talk or text while driving.
  • Use seat belts at all times and make sure back seat passengers are buckled up as well.
  • Obey posted speed limits, even if you are in a rush to get to your destination.
  • Avoid driving while distracted or drowsy.
  • If you plan on consuming alcohol, be sure to have a designated driver available to take you home. Even a relatively small amount of alcohol can impair your judgment and affect your reaction time.
